In its third year, the Asia chapter’s annual journalism conference has expanded into a bigger and more ambitious event, with a longer list of speakers and an array of workshops over two days.

The NewNowNext Media Conference, or N3Con, will be held May 24-26 at the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and is the only journalism conference of its kind in Asia. It expects to bring together more than 150 journalists, and media and Asia specialists to explore big topics affecting our community today and in the days to come.

Several AAJA members from the US are joining the Asia crew, including AAJA President Paul Cheung and former presidents Doris Truong and Sharon Chan — all to speak on panels on topics including media diversity, data journalism and networking.

N3Con will also have panels on North Korea (with Jean Lee of the Associated Press and Steve Herman of the Voice of America, among others) and Investigative Journalism in China, Social Media’s Effect on Asia Elections and Entrepreneurship. Speakers include AAJA members Ayako Mie (The Japan Times) and Youkyung Lee (the AP). Full speaker lineup.

The conference will also include skills-based sessions to help journalists advance to the next level in their careers. Topics include How to Write for the Web and Get Your Story Read with Eric Ulken (Seattle Times); How to Break Into the Industry with Andrew LaVallee (WSJ) and Angie Lau (Bloomberg TV); Create Your Own Ebook with Jeremiah Foo and Sam Hui.

This year is also the first year the conference will have a job fair, possibly Hong Kong’s first journalism/media recruitment event. Confirmed companies include the Associated Press, TIME, Wall Street Journal and Bloomberg.

N3Con is co-organized by AAJA-Asia and HKU’s Journalism & Media Studies Centre (JMSC). Headed by co-chairs Ramy Inocencio and Wendy Tang, the journalism conference first started in 2011 as a way for journalists in the region to compare notes, go in-depth on Asia’s biggest stories and learn how to hone their craft in a new media world.

N3Con will be live-streamed on Ustream on May 25-26. Follow @AAJAAsia and #n3con on Twitter for more announcements and live-coverage.

Registration for the conference is already open.
